Best Tank Classes in WoW SoD: Paladin, Warrior, Warlock, Shaman, Druid, Rogue
Rogue
Rogues venturing into tanking in SoD find it a gratifying challenge. Unlike traditional tanks, they don't have to compromise much on damage output, which keeps threat management relatively simple on single targets. However, they face hurdles with target switching and AoE threat generation. Tabbing between targets wipes out their combo points, disrupting threat control. While the Phase Two addition of Redirect allows them to shift combo points occasionally, it's insufficient. Many opt to initiate new targets with Mutilate for both damage and combo points. Although Shuriken Toss aims to alleviate AoE threat issues, its high energy cost and minimal damage render it less practical compared to tab-targeting and Mutilate.
Druid
Guardian Druids, the jack-of-all-trades tanking spec, grapple with threat management in WoW SoD. Acquiring crucial abilities often entails high-level locks or extensive questlines. While Phase Two provided some needed runes, they still require buffs, especially Swipe, for improved performance.
Shaman
Shaman tanks emerge as formidable contenders in Phase One of SoD, boasting excellent threat maintenance with Phase One runes like Molten Blast and Way of Earth. Phase Two enhancements such as Maelstrom Weapon Rune and Spirit of the Alpha bolster their threat generation. Despite lacking self-sustain and top-tier defensive cooldowns, they remain competent tanks, offering valuable party buffs through totems.
Warlock
Warlocks prove surprisingly adept at tanking in the Season of Discovery, courtesy of the Metamorphosis rune. Despite a lengthy questline to unlock this ability, warlocks excel at threat management and sustained DPS. However, they face stiff competition from warriors and paladins due to their superior threat and defensive capabilities.
Warrior
Warriors reclaim their reputation as top-tier tanks in SoD, armed with a comprehensive toolkit and formidable runes like Furious Thunder. Their exceptional DPS, threat control, and defensive prowess make them indispensable in group compositions. While lacking some party utility, Phase Two enhancements like Rallying Cry fortify their role as stalwart protectors.
Paladin
In WoW Classic, paladins trailed behind warriors in tanking prowess, mainly due to the absence of a direct taunt. However, with Hand of Reckoning introduced in SoD, paladins ascend to the apex of tanking excellence. Offering an array of party-wide auras, buffs, interrupts, and self-healing, paladins stand out as the ultimate choice for endgame PvE content.
